There are many handgun accessories that could improve your
family's survival rate in the event of a potential violent
confrontation. Many families are adding firearms to their home
defense kits, they are taking the lesson learned by New Orleans
families about the need for home defense, after the natural
disaster of Katrina. There are so many statistics from even more sources
on the possibility of the average US citizen being a victim of
violent crime that it would make your head spin. The bottom line
is that any time of the day - any place you are at there is the
possibility you or a member of your family could be a potential
victim. In the time of a natural disaster or man made disaster the
potential for violence or crime is increased exponentially. We
have taken the liberty of listing a few of the accessories that
would be useful in your emergency preparedness gear should you
decide to add a handgun to your kit.
A
quality holster will allow you to carry your handgun
in a concealed position while still being able to acquire your
weapon efficiently. The holster you choose needs to not only fit
your handgun well, it also needs to fit your needs and lifestyle.
How many
flashlights are enough? How many flashlights
are too few when needed by your family in the event you have an
emergency situation. Let's see, I keep one on my person at all
times in the form of a Surefire style personal flashlight. A
rechargeable flashlight from Streamlight in each of our vehicles,
a couple in the house, the barn and the garage. In my primary car,
I have a rechargeable
AE Light (personal
searchlight) and a
Streamlight rechargeable Strion. All
your flashlight do not have to be high end flashlights, unless
they are in your budget (You get what you
pay for most times). Until I went to this level of
coverage, I would always have to hunt around the house for a
flashlight when the power went out due to weather or accident.
Once you start carrying a personal flashlight you will wonder how
you ever got along without it. In Law Enforcement work it comes
out of my pocket 8 to 10 times a day, off duty a minimum of a couple times a
day. Quality flashlights are an absolute necessity for your
emergency preparedness kits.
Having the correct
apparel for a given situation is an
additional aid in surviving an emergency. Now we realize
that the average person may not be able to wear 5.11 tactical
series clothes everyday, or have a bug out bag with them at work.
However having rugged clothing and bug out bags available to you
is vital when a situation turns into a long term problem, such as
the aftermath of a flood, wild fires, riots etc.
The question of using a
Laser sight is
still a topic of many heated discussions among firearms tactical
instructors. As firearms instructors it is our opinion that as in
most firearms accessories there is always a circumstances there is
a practical use for them. In the instance of a Laser sight, they
are a great advantage for low light confrontations. We recommend
that you avoid the low cost Laser sights that attach to the
trigger guard. They will not hold point of aim, finding a quality
holster to fit them is impossible and their durability is
questionable. We have used and tested many different brands of
laser sights. Although we have access to all the laser sights we
can only recommend Lasermax, Crimson Trace and for long gun use
the Aimshot Green Lasers.
Bug out bags or Emergency preparedness
backpacks are absolutely essential as one of the most basics of
required equipment. What is a bug out bag? It is nothing more than
a bag to keep all of your basic survival gear in one easy and
quick to grab location. Maxpedition and Eberlestock are the
industry leaders in backpack and bug out bags for the serious
minded. Fortunately my position and lifestyle allows me to always
have a bug out bag with me at all times, either in my vehicle or
with my person. If you've had to care for a baby you know all
about a diaper bag to carry everything you can think of to clean -
change - feed- amuse the little crumb snatchers. A bug out bag is
the same thing, however you will carry the items related to your
area and possible situation. For example if you live in Arizona,
you would include desert survival gear backpack: snake bite related items
in your first aid kit, if you live in an area with ice and snow
storms you would have appropriate gear for cold weather.

Any Books or articles you can read
regarding tactical and defensive handgun use, emergency
preparedness, disaster preparedness will be obviously be
beneficial to your family. Of course you will want to read
information that would be related to the possible environmental
issues that your family may need to survive. It is also advisable
that you have a basic first aid manual available.
We are not suggesting that you need to go to the
extreme of building a compound and come up with a plan "How
to protect your compound in an L formation". We simply
advise that having a plan of action for your family in the event
of a probable emergency situation is a solid idea, and if you
never need it you are ahead of the game.
